Host Families

Looking for an opportunity to host an overseas student? Are you a family with a strong interest in learning about another culture? Do you have at least 2 related people in the home? …then we need YOU!

NZIIU has several programmes that involve hosting students. We host students from eight years of age to adults. Ongoing orientation and support is part of the hosting process. NZIIU is a non-profit organisation but we do pay a small fee for hosting students. In return, you and your family have the fabulous experience of learning another culture and making life-long friends.

SHORT TERM

Students, from as young as eight years old, participate in NZIIU’s short term cultural homestay programmes. They usually visit NZ for one to four weeks (but sometimes their stay is longer). All potential host families are interviewed in person and are required to implement the requirements of the Code of Practice. The students come from a range of countries such as Japan, China, Taiwan and France. NZIIU can also receive specialist groups such as sports, cultural, martial arts, dance and host family groups. NZIIU gives total support to families hosting.

LONG TERM

Exchange Student Programme [more info]

These students are aged between 15 & 18 and come from many countries to attend full-time classes at high school in NZ. The length of stay is from 3-10 months. All our students are carefully screened & selected before being accepted onto our programmes. Students are placed throughout NZ & have counsellors living locally to assist the student & the host family.

We pay an allowance to hosting families to assist in covering expenses. This allowance is provided directly by NZIIU, as under the international philosophy of exchange programmes, students do not pay for being a member of a host family.

Full Fee Paying Students Programme [more info]

These students usually come for 3-12 months or longer. We pay the “market rate” for hosting these students.

Students are placed throughout NZ & have counsellors who live locally to assist the student & the host family. Students come to NZ to join a NZ family & participate in the NZ way of life.

We are looking for families committed to providing a safe, healthy & fun environment for the students during their stay in NZ.

Hosting a student brings responsibility but also many rewards. We appoint Regional Homestay Managers (RHM) to look after the welfare of both the student & host family. Reports are sent to the student’s home country every 3 months & we have strict rules which the students & families are required to follow.

Hosting brings great joy to many families especially as they feel secure in the fact that NZIIU is constantly monitoring progress and offering support.
