Language and Culture
You need to be fluent in English and it is preferable for you to have some knowledge of Dutch before you leave. It is also desirable that you have some idea of Dutch culture and ways of communicating.
Bicycles are a major, daily form of transport and you can expect to be involved in this. Some Dutch people cycle for a considerable distance each day. Food and meals are very different from most NZ families.
Placements
These are made before you leave and if you have applied at the correct time you should be in contact with your host family for at least a week before you leave. Some students are in contact for a month or more. Host families have to go through an interview and vetting process and your personality and preferences are taken into account if at all possible. However, it is best to keep an open mind about which situation is going to give you a good experience.
Visas
If you have a UK or European passport you will not need a visa. If you are travelling on a New Zealand passport, your visa will be arranged after you have arrived. There is an extra fee for this of around $500.
Five month programmes can be extended but there is a substantial additional fee.
Orientation
You will receive a brief orientation before you leave and on arrival will be transferred to accommodation with other exchange students. Everyone will have an orientation session which will include language instruction.
